25 Wedding Invitation Etiquette Rules You Should Know
Planning a wedding is one of the most exciting journeys you'll take, but let's be real—it comes with its fair share of challenges. Among them is sending out invitations, a seemingly simple step that actually involves quite a bit of thought, timing, and etiquette. Whether you're a bride, groom, or trusted friend helping with the logistics, understanding the dos and don’ts of wedding invitations can save you stress (and prevent unnecessary drama). In this wedding planning guide for Boston area couples, we will share 25 essential wedding invitation etiquette rules you should know.

Before we begin, we’d like to take a moment to introduce ourselves and warmly welcome you to our family-owned wedding and event venue. Family is at the heart of everything we do, and we take immense pride in treating our couples—and their guests—as part of our extended family. If you’re looking for a wedding venue that prioritizes you and makes you feel truly welcomed & appreciated, you’ve found the perfect New England wedding venue.

Timeline and Sending Invites 1. Send Save the Dates Early Save the dates typically go out 6 to 8 months before the wedding. For destination weddings or holiday weekends, consider giving guests more notice.
2. Invitations Go Out 6 to 8 Weeks Before For local weddings, 6-8 weeks ahead is standard. Guests attending from afar? Send their invites slightly earlier.
3. RSVP Deadlines are a Must Set your RSVP deadline for at least 2-3 weeks before the wedding day to give yourself enough time for final headcounts.
4. Don’t Send Invites Too Early Sending invitations too far in advance (more than 3 months) may cause guests to forget or lose them.

Wording the Invitations 5. Match the Tone of Your Wedding Your invitation sets the tone. Casual backyard celebration? Opt for informal wording. Black-tie affair? Stick with formal language.
6. Include All Key Details Ensure your invites cover the essentials:
  • Names of the couple
  • Wedding date and time
  • Ceremony and reception locations
  • RSVP instructions
7. Avoid Overcrowded Text Keep your invitation concise. Too much text makes it look cluttered and harder to read.
8. Proofread Multiple Times Typos happen to everyone, but they’re a no-go on wedding invitations. Enlist several people to proofread.
9. Use Full Names Include the full first and last names of the couple, as well as both sets of parents (if applicable). Avoid nicknames on formal invitations.

Addressing Invitations 10. Use Proper Titles Be mindful of titles like “Mr.,” “Mrs.,” or “Dr.” when addressing your envelopes. Also, be aware of gender-neutral titles, such as Mx., if it applies.
11. Spell Out Everything Avoid abbreviating addresses. Write "Street," "Avenue," and "Road" instead of their shorter versions on envelopes.
12. Include All Intended Guests To avoid confusion, clearly list every invited guest on the envelope:
  • “John and Jane Doe” (invites the couple)
  • “John Doe and Guest” (allows a plus-one)
13. Spell Out Children’s Names If Invited If you’re inviting kids, list their names on the envelope beneath their parents' names.
14. Skip Address Labels Handwrite or use professional calligraphy for addressing envelopes. This adds a personal touch and looks polished.

Guest Management 15. Be Clear About Plus-Ones Specify if a guest is allowed to bring a plus-one or not. Adding “and Guest” makes it clear they are welcome to bring a companion.
16. Don’t Insist on Gifts Avoid any mention of gifts on the formal invitation. Instead, include a separate card or link to your wedding website with registry info.
17. Manage Adult-Only Weddings Thoughtfully If your event is adults-only, politely state it on the invite (e.g., “Adult-only ceremony and reception”).
18. Stick to Your Guest List Avoid exceptions to your guest list. Adding last-minute invitees can throw off your seating plan and budget.

Design and Presentation 19. Choose Quality Paper High-quality paper sets the tone for your wedding and ensures your invites feel special.
20. Stay On-Brand with Your Theme Match your invitation design to your wedding theme. Beachside wedding? Soft blues and sandy neutrals may work well!
21. Include a Reception Card (If Needed) For ceremonies and receptions held in different locations, include an additional card with clear directions.
22. Add a RSVP Card or Link Include an RSVP card or an online RSVP link that's simple and easy for guests to respond.
23. Seal Envelopes Properly Avoid cheap stickers to seal envelopes. Wrapping a ribbon around your invite or using a wax seal adds an elegant touch.
24. Double-Check Postage Weigh your completed invitation before mailing to ensure it doesn’t require extra postage. This is especially important if your invite includes multiple inserts.
25. Keep Track of Responses Track RSVPs in a spreadsheet or wedding planning app to stay organized and follow up with guests who forget to respond.
